Chendol in Melaka – Donald & Lily, Makko, Jeta Groves, Nancy’s Kitchen & Justberrys

This list is based on the chendol(s) that I have personally sampled so far. Do feel free to recommend more by leaving your suggestions in the comment section of this post ! :)

My advice? Ignore all of them and just head over to Justberrys.
For the long story, read on.
*********************************************************************************************************************************************
I had wanted “Nyonya food” for lunch on this 2 days trip.
So the 1st day was at Makko; just because David, my partner for the trip insisted that Makko’s chendol is good.
But we were too early so we headed to Jeta Groves for a quick snack before lunch.

I have been here before years back and one of the dishes I enjoyed here was the Lontong. It didn’t disappoint; still as creamy and tasty. Served piping hot with a dollop of chilli if you’re looking for spice, it was a fulfilling plate with soft yet firm rice cubes and generous amount of vegetables and half an egg.

But it was the chendol that I had wanted David to try.

Verdict?
It wasn’t too bad. It’s difficult to beat the fine shaven ice from Justberrys and the gula melaka lacked the caramelized depth but still, it was good for its price (RM4 or thereabouts).
I love the small beans though on this day, the beans were still a bit hard inside as it wasn’t cooked through. A shame really.
The green chendol strips were a nice emerald green, translucent, smooth and fresh, not the mushy, dull green types which I abhor. Even the coconut milk was rich enough.

When Makko was finally open for business we shifted our widening asses over to the large air conditioned comfort of the spacious corner lot.

We ordered lunch for 3 pax and of course, a bowl of David’s chendol.

Lunch was bad, and the same can be said for the chendol.

Perhaps Makko thought thicker is better? This mould of coarsely shaven ice was drizzled with very, very thick gula melaka and coconut milk.
If you’re of opinion that thick gula melaka can’t go wrong, you’re very much mistaken. Besides having good ratio of creaminess from the coconut milk to the sweetness of the gula melaka, an ideal (for me at least) bowl of chendol should be rained with quality gula melaka; one that has a deep caramelized flavour, a tad smoky even and the unmistakable aroma of rich, dark molasses.
The gula melaka in this chendol was way diabetic-ally sweet, which was made me suspect that it was mixed with plenty of white sugar.
Well, if it’s of any consolation, the kidney beans were soft and the chendol strips were alright.

The next day we had lunch at Nancy’s Kitchen on Jonker Street. It is pretty difficult to find pork Nyonya dishes as more and more outlets converted to being pork-free to cater to the commercial crowd. I thought that is rather silly, considering the fact that most Muslim (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) don’t patronize Nyonya food outlets as frequently anyways.

Anyhow since we are at a Nyonya food outlet we ordered a chendol to go with our meal.

I will always like my ice fine so you will be hearing that complaint a lot from me. But out of all the chendol(s) we have sampled on this trip, this was the worst.
Other than that, the coconut milk was rich and creamy, the gula melaka fragrant and the green chendol strips nice and fresh. They used small red beans which was cooked til soft so that’s a plus point.

Last stop before we left Melaka was Donald and Lily’s.
After all, since we are on a gluttony run, might as well go all the way right? :d

Donald & Lily’s chendol was actually pretty good.
The ice is still pretty coarse, but at least the gula melaka was thick, smoky and fragrant rather than just saccharin sweet. The chendol has a good consistency with both the coconut milk and gula melaka in balanced ratio. In addition to that, small sago shared the bowl with green chendol strips and small red beans.

So that’s it for now.
I shall be heading to Melaka again soon. Meanwhile, leave a suggestion here if you have any food/place that you think I should try!
Also, does anyone know where to have a good authentic Nyonya meal?

(Doc eat doc:10 things you need to give up to become a doctor)

10 things you need to give up to become a doctor

sacrifices to become a doctor
Following a recent article elsewhere which generated an interesting discussion, I started thinking about the things one must give up on the road to becoming a doctor. It’s a long road, beginning with an initial decision, some early voluntary experiences, an application to university and some hard work trying to achieve the barely possible at GCSE and AS / A2.
But it doesn’t even end there. The hard work really only begins at medical school where long hours and repeated exams are considered normal and where you need your patients more than they need you.
There are plenty of things you have to give up along the way, here are my top 10:

1. Your desire to be wealthyVery few people in medicine ever become hugely wealthy, at least not in Europe. If riches are what you desire there are many many easier ways of getting that involve alot less heartache, money and stress. If you want to be a millionnaire before you’re 30, my advice would be to avoid university altogether. Most doctors are in the profession for genuinely altruistic reasons as well as the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you have the skills and knowledge to save lives and apply these every single day as a routine part of your work.
2. Your desire to change the worldEqually you must, eventually, give up on the idea of becoming some sort of medical superhero who can solve the worlds medical problems one by one. Yes doctors can do some impressive things when applying their skills to the right situation. But remember that however good your intentions, you will not be able to overcome the problems caused by poverty, war, government neglect or abuse, or coorporate profiteering at the expense of the sick. That doesn’t mean you can’t try to help people afflicted by any of these, you’ll just find that you are usually too small to make any real systemic difference.

3. Your free weekends
It starts at medical school when the work starts to pile up, and weekends are sacrificed to meet deadlines and for exam revision. Once you start working as a junior doctor, you’ll find yourself scanning each new doctors rota to work out where your on-call weekends have landed and who can swop with you so that you can still go on that holiday or get married or whatever. There will be sunny weekends when your non-medic friends will be having a barbecue whilst you sweat it out on a ward seeing yet another gastrointestinal bleed wondering why you chose this path.

4. A good nights sleep

Gone are the days where doctors would be on call for 48 or 72 hours and then do a clinic for the boss before retiring to bed. However, modern working arrangements have brought into existence the ‘week of nights’ where you work 4 or 5 and sometimes 7 night shifts in a row.
As someone who has done these I can confirm that doing nights ispretty inhumane. The talk amongst doctors doing nights together often centres around changing specialty or leaving the profession. Don’t worry, it all gets forgotten once normal daytime duties are restored.

5. Your desire to avoid feeling like a fool

You will make mistakes from time to time in this job and your mistakes will all be potentially serious ones, simply because everything you do affects your patients’ lives directly.
Furthermore, there will be times when you have to withstand an onslaught from senior doctors who feel that teaching by humiliation is the only way forward. You will feel like an idiot at times and if the thought of that frightens you you should promptly pick a different profession.

6. Your desire to always put friends and family first

As a doctor your job usually takes priority and you simply cannot shirk your responsibilities simply because you have prior engagements of a personal nature. Over the years I’ve known many difficult situations including a colleague who had to turn down a role as best man for a close friend because nobody could swop his on-call weekend with him and the hospital refused to organise a locum to cover him.
Apart from sickness or bereavement, your first priority will be to your profession. Your friends and family may find that difficult to understand at first. They’ll come round to it with time, especially once they delete your number.

the long road ahead

7. Your desire to please everyone.
Whether it’s your friends or family, as above, or your future patients you’d better get used to upsetting people from time to time. Telling your wife you need to postpone an evening engagement because you are still operating on a difficult case, or telling a patient you won’t be operating on them as they only have three months to live, are both likely to be met with upset. Each situation has it’s unique challenges and needs some communication skills, but the bottom line is that you will have times when you will have to make someone want to either hit you or cry in despair.

8. Your creativity
Not many people admit this but medicine takes people who are often very creative and turns them into workaholic, automatons who have little room left in their lives for creativity. If you want evidence for this, go to any dinner party that includes more than one doctor. Chief discussion topic will be work and medicine. That’s partly because anecdotes from doctoring are entertaining, but also because if the medics stray from this conversation topic, they will rapidly expose their banality and limited insights in other areas particularly all things creative.
Much of medicine does not allow much creativity in it’s day to day practice and the intensity of the work beats any desire for creative thinking right out of you before you even realise it’s happening.* Of course whilst accepting this fact you must fight this tendency and attempt to keep up your other interests, otherwise, I can guarantee medicine will invade everything you do.
*There are a few notable exceptions to this!

9. Your desire to stay in one place / live close to friends and family.
Want to do something competitive, like medicine? You have to realise that choosing your location is a luxury and you may have to follow your dream in a less than ideal location. Even after you graduate, having your heart set on one speciality is a sure way to geographical instability. Some people don’t mind this, but some with strong family ties or a mortgage, the need to move frequently is a pain.
I began to come to terms with this when I found that even the most obscure places have hospitals. Working in these places you’re just as likely to meet doctors who have also had to move from here from the other side of the country. It’s a great way to meet people but easy to lose touch once you move on.

10. Good health
You may not know it, but you’re joining a profession that has high rates of physical and mental illness as well as drug and alcohol misuse. Doctors are also less likely to seek help than other professions which all adds to a rather worrying picture.
Although ill health isn’t guaranteed in a medical profession you should realise the future risk now and take steps to formulate good lifestyle habits to minimise your risk factors. A good network of non-medical friends should also protect you from neglecting your own needs while you’re treating your patients.

That’s plenty to sacrifice just for a job isn’t it? However, I guess the reason you’re in medicine (or trying to get in) is that you’ve realised that medicine is not just a job, it’s a whole way of life, that’s difficult to let go of once you’ve decided to enter it, and these sacrifices are simply part of the deal.

Watch Live Football And Sport On Google Chrome

If you want to watch free live sports in your browser, Chrome enjoys a big advantage – the Live Sport extension.
Chrome Live Sport extension provides a schedule of live sports from around the world with accompanying links to live streaming videos to watch online in your web browser – without having to install additional programs like Sopcast.
Chrome Live Sport is as easy to use as the popular MyP2P website. The sports covered are Football (soccer), Tennis, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball and Others (minor sports). The Football selection includes the English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Champions League etc. The Tennis selection includes major ATP and WTA events like the US Open etc.
There is also the option to just view live scores but this covers Football only.
Chrome Live Sport is free and can be downloaded from the Google Chrome Web Store here – after installing you should see a picture of a football in the top right of Chrome.
Click on the football to display two menu options – click on Live Stream (for video feeds) or Live Score (for football scores):
Live Stream: The live stream selection window pops up as shown in the example below:
livesport
  • To make it easier to check what’s on, change the time in the top right to GMT + or – however many hours you need to match your local time zone. The clock will change too and should match your current time.
  • Select your desired sport (Football or Tennis etc) from the menu to display the schedule for today’s current and future events.
  • Click the Video button of the event you want to watch and hopefully you will see one or more links to live video streams. The links are called Link #1 and Link #2 etc and there are often several different suppliers of such feeds to choose from.
  • Click on a Link to open up the live streaming video feed in a new window – most feeds have an option to choose ‘Full Screen’ if you prefer.
Tips: Just like MyP2P, the quality of video feeds can vary considerably – if one is poor, intermittent or isn’t showing the right event, try another Link. A few feeds may state (next to the Link) that they require registration – this may require payment so try a different Link instead.
There may be no commentary or it may be in a foreign language – it just depends on where the feed is coming from. The more popular the event, the more likely there are to be multiple (and better quality) feeds.
Live Score: The Live Score selection window pops up showing today’s matches – for Football only.
  • Click on the menu bar if you want to change to ‘Live Now’ or ‘Scheduled’ or ‘Finished’ scores. The screen is updated every 5 seconds so there is no need to refresh the page.
  • Click on an actual score to reveal more info e.g. the goalscorers, time that a goal was scored and any yellow/red cards.
Where Do The Streaming Videos Come From?
The Live Sport extension developers say they do not host any video streams on their server i.e. Live Sport just lists the feeds and links to them like MyP2p.eu does – the feeds themselves are hosted elsewhere on the internet. Providing the links in an easily accessible format means you don’t have to scour the internet looking for them.
Whether the actual feeds are strictly legal is anyone’s guess – it depends who provides them. This is similar to MyP2P but to be accepted into the Chrome Web Store we assume that Google are happy that the Live Sport extension itself is safe to use.
